Nigeria loses an estimated 350,000–400,000 hectares of forest every year. Between 1990 and 2005, while the world lost 3.3% of its forests, Nigeria lost 21%. The consequences are already visible: soil erosion, droughts, crop failures, flooding, and deepening poverty.
RUSISD was born, in part, out of a response to this crisis. From day one, environmental stewardship has been at the heart of everything we do.
What We Do
Tree Planting & Afforestation
Every year at the Diocesan Synod, RUSISD distributes seedlings of fruit trees and indigenous tree species to participants — encouraging every church, home, and community to plant and protect trees. We believe reforestation is not just environmental policy; it is a moral obligation.
Biogas Production Training
RUSISD has trained hundreds of people — clergy, farmers, students, and community members — in converting biodegradable household and farm waste into clean cooking gas. This reduces dependence on firewood, protects forests, and creates real cost savings for families.
Risk Assessment & Environmental Audits
We have conducted formal environmental risk assessments at church properties across the diocese, identifying threats like soil erosion, landslides, land encroachment, and drainage issues — and training youth to identify and report risks in their communities.
Environmental Advocacy & IEC Materials
RUSISD has produced and distributed thousands of posters, handbills, and educational materials on tree planting, environmental protection, corruption, and good governance — reaching schools, churches, and communities across Nigeria.
Home Gardens & Organic Farming
We teach communities to grow their own organic vegetables and fruits, using composting techniques that enrich the soil, reduce chemical input costs, and ensure healthier food for families.
Forty participants from 10 archdeaconries gathered for a two-day workshop on biogas production from biodegradable domestic waste, led by an expert from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNNAB). Participants learned how to build and use both fixed-dome and floating biodigesters.
